TITLE
Ritesh Rajan: TMJ ankylosis - Distract First, Release Later
TALK INFO
In this clinically focused session, Ritesh Rajan presents a strategic and innovative approach to the management of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis — “Distract First, Release Later.”
TMJ ankylosis presents complex functional, aesthetic, and psychosocial challenges, particularly in growing patients. Traditional surgical approaches often involve ankylosis release followed by reconstruction; however, Dr. Rajan discusses the rationale, biomechanics, and clinical outcomes of performing distraction osteogenesis prior to joint release in selected cases.
The session will cover case selection, surgical planning, vector control, timing considerations, prevention of re-ankylosis, and long-term functional rehabilitation. Emphasis will be placed on growth considerations, airway implications, occlusal stability, and minimizing relapse. Through case-based discussions and outcome analysis, participants will gain practical insights into optimizing results in these challenging deformities.
This lecture is ideal for maxillofacial surgeons, residents, and clinicians managing complex TMJ pathology and craniofacial deformities.
