By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the biological principles and mechanisms underlying distraction osteogenesis in the maxillofacial region.

  2. Identify clinical indications and contraindications for the use of distraction osteogenesis in craniofacial and maxillofacial deformities.

  3. Differentiate between various distraction devices and techniques, including internal and external distractors.

  4. Outline the stages of distraction osteogenesis—latency, activation, consolidation, and retention—and their clinical significance.

  5. Recognize potential complications and limitations of maxillofacial distraction osteogenesis and strategies for their prevention and management.

  6. Evaluate patient selection and treatment planning considerations to optimize functional and aesthetic outcomes.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr. Maria Papadaki MD, DMD, PhD is an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon and Assistant Professor at the European University of Cyprus, former Instructor Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Massachussetts General Hospital.
