About the event
In this clinical session, Dr. Rusha Patel addresses the critical role of medical optimization in patients scheduled for head and neck surgery — particularly complex oncologic and microvascular reconstructive procedures. The talk covers evidence-based strategies and perioperative planning aimed at identifying and managing medical risk factors that can influence surgical outcomes, complication rates, and overall recovery. Attendees learn how thorough preoperative assessment and optimization of comorbid conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, nutritional status, and airway challenges can reduce perioperative morbidity and enhance recovery pathways. The session also highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach, integrating medical, anesthetic, and surgical considerations to improve patient resilience before, during, and after major head and neck procedures — reflecting principles similar to enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols that have been shown to improve outcomes in major surgical specialties.
