TITLE
Eugenia Figueiredo: TMJ Open Disc Repositioning - Redefining Indications and Timing
TALK INFO
In this evidence-based lecture, Eugenia Figueiredo revisits open TMJ discopexy through the lens of contemporary clinical research and long-term outcome studies. Drawing on her peer-reviewed publications, the session examines how disc morphology, stage of internal derangement, inflammatory status, and patient-specific factors influence surgical success.
The lecture focuses on refining indications and timing—distinguishing patients who benefit from early surgical intervention from those better managed conservatively or with alternative procedures. Emphasis is placed on avoiding delayed intervention that compromises outcomes, while also preventing unnecessary surgery in self-limiting disease. Clinical decision algorithms, imaging correlations, and functional outcomes are integrated to support practical, evidence-driven TMJ care.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
Describe current evidence supporting open TMJ discopexy and disc repositioning techniques.
Identify patient-, disc-, and disease-specific factors that define appropriate indications for surgery.
Determine optimal timing for open discopexy based on stage of internal derangement and symptom progression.
Apply outcome data to select the most appropriate surgical or non-surgical TMJ intervention.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Eugenia Figueiredo, DDS, PhD, is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and academic clinician recognized for her expertise in temporomandibular joint surgery, with a particular focus on open discopexy and disc repositioning. Her work has contributed to a more nuanced understanding of when surgical intervention is beneficial—and when it is not—in patients with TMJ internal derangement.
Drawing on a substantial body of peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Figueiredo has examined disc morphology, disease staging, timing of intervention, and long-term functional outcomes following TMJ surgery. Her research challenges overly restrictive or delayed surgical paradigms and provides evidence-based criteria for refining indications and optimizing patient selection.
As an educator and invited international speaker, Dr. Figueiredo is known for translating research findings into practical clinical decision-making. Her teaching emphasizes individualized treatment planning, careful integration of imaging and clinical findings, and outcome-driven selection of TMJ surgical techniques to improve patient function and quality of life.
