TITLE
VIVEK VARDHAN REDDY: Surgery First Orthognathic Approach
TALK INFO
The session “Surgery First Orthognathic Approach” explored an innovative treatment philosophy in orthognathic surgery where corrective jaw surgery is performed before any presurgical orthodontic treatment, challenging the traditional sequence of orthodontics preceding surgery. Instead of the conventional orthodontics-first protocol, the surgery-first orthognathic approach (SFOA) aims to shorten overall treatment time, improve early facial aesthetics, increase patient satisfaction, and accelerate orthodontic tooth movement after skeletal correction. Participants learned about the rationale, planning strategies, indications, contraindications, advantages, limitations and case-based outcomes associated with this evolving orthosurgical protocol.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of this session, participants were expected to be able to:
Describe the core concept of the surgery-first orthognathic approach, including how it differs from conventional orthognathic protocols by performing jaw surgery before orthodontic treatment.
Identify key clinical indications and patient selection criteria for applying the surgery-first approach in dentofacial deformity correction.
Explain the potential advantages and limitations of the technique — such as shortened treatment duration and early aesthetic improvement, balanced against technical planning challenges and occlusal considerations.
Outline the planning and collaborative workflow between surgeons and orthodontists — including simulation, surgical execution, and post-surgical orthodontic management.
Interpret clinical examples and outcomes to inform evidence-based decision-making in orthognathic treatment planning.
