TITLE

Risto Kontio & Hanna Välimaa: Prevention of MRONJ – Consider risk factors: what the current literature says

TALK INFO

This educational session focused on Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ), with emphasis on prevention and risk factor assessment based on the most current clinical literature. The lecture was part of a broader series addressing MRONJ — a serious complication associated with antiresorptive and antiangiogenic medications used in oncology and osteoporosis care. The session reviewed why MRONJ occurs, how to identify patients at risk, and evidence-based preventive strategies, especially in patients undergoing dental, oral surgical, or maxillofacial procedures.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this session, attendees were expected to be able to:

  1. Describe the current understanding of MRONJ pathophysiology and epidemiology — including why the jaw is particularly susceptible and how medications such as bisphosphonates and denosumab contribute to risk.

  2. Identify and interpret documented risk factors related to MRONJ development (e.g., drug type, dose and duration, systemic co-morbidities like diabetes or corticosteroid use, and local factors such as dental extractions or periodontal disease).

  3. Apply evidence-based prevention strategies — including assessment before initiating antiresorptive therapy, optimizing oral health, careful dental treatment planning, and how to integrate findings from recent literature into clinical decision-making.

  4. Evaluate the role of multidisciplinary care in minimizing MRONJ risk — highlighting the importance of collaboration among surgeons, dentists, microbiologists, and other healthcare professionals.
