Nos últimos anos, o Planejamento Cirúrgico Virtual (VSP) emergiu como um recurso valioso para cirurgiões craniofaciais, auxiliando em diversos procedimentos, como ortognático, cranio-orbital, traumático e microcirurgia, por meio da integração do planejamento virtual e do Design e Fabricação Assistidos por Computador (CAD/CAM). Apesar de sua crescente popularidade, houve um foco limitado na curva de aprendizado associada ao VSP. Embora seja reconhecida sua utilidade na cirurgia craniofacial, é crucial reconhecer os problemas inerentes que os cirurgiões podem encontrar ao utilizar essa ferramenta. No entanto, com a experiência acumulada, esses planos cirúrgicos podem evoluir para poderosos suplementos ao bom julgamento clínico, aprimorando, em última análise, os resultados gerais dos pacientes.
