Gleisse Wantowski: Botox & Fillers: Adjuncts in Orthognathic Surgery

TALK INFO

Orthognathic Surgery aims to restore function and aesthetics in patients with maxillo-mandibular deformities. While the repositioning of the skeletal structures is very successful in reaching these goals soft tissue imperfections may remain. Learn from Dr. Wantowski's extensive experience using Botox and Fillers as adjuncts in orthognathic surgery.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After participating in this session, learners should be able to:

  1. Describe the role of Botox (botulinum toxin) in orthognathic surgery planning, including how it can be used to temporarily reduce muscle activity that exaggerates soft-tissue repositioning after bony movements (e.g., to address gummy smile or hyperactive elevator muscles).

  2. Explain the indications for using dermal fillers as adjuncts in orthognathic surgical cases, particularly when soft-tissue volume enhancement (e.g., in lips, cheeks) may improve facial balance and esthetic harmony beyond skeletal correction.

  3. Differentiate between functional and aesthetic goals in orthognathic surgery and how aesthetic adjuncts (Botox and fillers) can contribute to optimizing both facial appearance and patient satisfaction.

  4. Identify appropriate timing for adjunctive procedures, such as pre-surgical Botox to manage dynamic muscle forces versus post-surgical fillers once swelling has resolved.

  5. Discuss potential benefits, limitations, and patient-selection criteria for combining Botox and fillers with standard orthognathic procedures, including managing patient expectations and safety considerations.
