Fellowship Overview:

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common disorder affecting at least 2-4% of the adult population and is associated with a diminished quality of life, hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, thereby making it a significant public health concern. As such, treatment of OSA is in growing demand from the public.

 

The aim of the Fellowship in surgical and dental sleep medicine is to provide trainees with the clinical education and surgical experience necessary to develop understanding and expertise in providing treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and snoring. Particular focus is placed whereby treatment of OSA will have a profound impact on patient’s systemic and overall health.


Trainees will develop expertise in:

  • Assessing and treating patients for OSA

  • The surgical and non-surgical management of patients with sleep breathing disorders

  • The diagnosis and management of complications following mandibular advancement device (MAD) therapy and maxillomandibular advancement surgery(MMA)

  • Cross-disciplinary treatment of OSA with sub-specialties in sleep medicine, such as Respirology, Otolaryngology, and Neurology


 

Requirements

The 12-month Fellowship in Surgical and Dental Sleep medicine will combine "core" clinical rotations in surgical and dental sleep medicine and rotations in key disciplines whereby referral to dental sleep medicine is based on cross-disciplinary management of chronic disease and systemic management of ramifications of Sleep Breathing Disorders. Clinical and translational research will also be a vital component of the Fellowship, with dedicated research time centered around clinical decision making and quality improvement.
