About the event

Oral cancer management is entering a new era. This session highlights cutting-edge diagnostic tools, modern imaging strategies, updated staging approaches, and evolving surgical and adjuvant treatment paradigms. Participants will gain practical insights into early detection, precision work-up, risk stratification, and multidisciplinary pathways that optimize outcomes. Designed for surgeons seeking to stay ahead of rapidly changing evidence, this lecture explores what’s new, what’s proven, and what’s coming next in oral oncology.

SPEAKER

Waleed Zaid, DDS, MSc, FRCD(c), FACS earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery from Ajman University and completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency at McGill University. He holds an MSc in head and neck oncology and a fellowship in head and neck oncology and microvascular reconstruction from Boston Medical Center. Dr. Zaid is a Professor at Louisiana State University Health Science Center, focusing on Head and Neck Oncology and microvascular reconstruction. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and serves as Chief of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Our Lady of The Lake Regional Medical Center. He is also the fellowship director for Head and Neck Oncology & Microvascular Reconstruction. Additionally, Dr. Zaid completed a surgical leadership program at Harvard Medical School and has published widely in peer-reviewed journals.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After completing this activity, participants will be able to:

  2. Outline an evidence-based work-up for patients with suspected or confirmed oral cancer, incorporating updated imaging, staging, and risk-assessment guidelines.

  3. Evaluate contemporary treatment strategies, including advances in surgical management, reconstructive approaches, and indications for adjuvant therapy.

  4. Apply multidisciplinary decision-making principles to improve patient outcomes across early, locally advanced, and recurrent disease settings.

  5. Recognize key challenges and opportunities in integrating new technologies and clinical pathways into daily surgical practice.
