Join us for an insightful talk on the critical aspects of alveolar bone grafting (ABG) for individuals with cleft lip and palate. The discussion will focus on the importance of timing the procedure, typically between the ages of 8 and 12, to achieve optimal outcomes for dental and facial development. Various ABG techniques, such as iliac crest bone grafting and synthetic graft materials, will be explored, with an emphasis on selecting the best approach based on the patient's condition. The talk will also cover the long-term outcomes, including the success of grafts in dental arch development, speech improvement, and preventing further deformities, while addressing potential complications and the need for ongoing care.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
Explain the significance of proper timing for alveolar bone grafting (ABG) in patients with cleft lip and palate, particularly during the mixed dentition phase (ages 8–12).
Compare and contrast common ABG techniques, including iliac crest bone grafting and synthetic graft materials, and identify appropriate indications for each.
Evaluate long-term outcomes of ABG with respect to dental arch development, speech enhancement, and craniofacial stability.
Recognize potential complications associated with ABG procedures and formulate strategies for management and ongoing care.
Apply patient-specific factors to optimize surgical planning and improve functional and aesthetic outcomes in cleft care.
