About the event
What do patients remember most after surgery?
While technical excellence is essential, patients often remember something else: whether they felt heard, understood, and cared for. Trust, communication, empathy, and human connection profoundly influence patient experience, adherence, satisfaction, and ultimately healing.
In this keynote lecture, Dr. Safwan Tayeb explores the often-overlooked skills that define exceptional clinicians. Drawing on his experience as a surgeon, educator, mentor, and physician communicator, he will discuss how trust is built, how difficult conversations can be navigated with confidence and compassion, and why communication remains one of the most powerful tools available to any healthcare professional.
Through stories, practical examples, and evidence-based insights, participants will examine strategies for strengthening therapeutic relationships, improving patient engagement, and fostering meaningful human connections in an increasingly complex healthcare environment.
Whether interacting with patients, families, trainees, or colleagues, the ability to communicate effectively remains a defining characteristic of outstanding clinical practice. This session will challenge participants to rethink communication not as a "soft skill," but as a core clinical competency that directly impacts outcomes, professional satisfaction, and healing.
SPEAKER
Safwan Tayeb, MD, FRCSC is a Canadian-trained ophthalmologist, educator, and speaker with a strong interest in physician communication, patient-centered care, mentorship, and professional development. He completed his medical training at King Abdulaziz University and subsequently pursued specialty training and fellowship education through the University of Toronto and leading North American institutions.
In addition to his clinical and academic work, Dr. Tayeb has developed a significant educational presence focused on communication, trust-building, physician wellness, and the human dimensions of healthcare. Through lectures, mentorship, and social media outreach, he encourages healthcare professionals to cultivate the interpersonal skills that underpin effective healing relationships.
His presentations explore how empathy, listening, trust, and authentic communication influence patient outcomes, strengthen therapeutic alliances, and contribute to professional fulfillment. Dr. Tayeb is passionate about helping clinicians develop the "non-technical" skills that often have the greatest impact on patients' experiences of care.
