About the event

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a complex disorder with significant effects on health, quality of life, and daytime function. While positive airway pressure remains an important therapy, many patients are unable to tolerate or achieve adequate treatment with PAP, creating a need for effective alternatives tailored to the individual patient's airway anatomy and physiology.

Hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HGNS) has emerged as an important surgical option in contemporary OSA management. By stimulating the hypoglossal nerve during sleep, upper airway stimulation targets tongue position and airway patency without relying on conventional skeletal or soft-tissue reconstruction.

In this lecture, Dr. Rishi Jay Gupta will provide a clinically focused overview of hypoglossal nerve stimulation for OSA, placing the technology within the broader spectrum of modern sleep surgery. He will discuss patient evaluation and selection, airway assessment, surgical principles of implantation, treatment optimization, outcomes, and important considerations in determining which patients are most likely to benefit.

The lecture will also examine how hypoglossal nerve stimulation complements established surgical approaches such as maxillomandibular advancement and how increasingly sophisticated airway phenotyping can help clinicians move toward a more individualized approach to OSA treatment.

Drawing on his specialized training in sleep surgery and experience in oral and maxillofacial surgery, Dr. Gupta will provide practical insights into integrating upper airway stimulation into a multidisciplinary sleep practice.

This session is designed for oral and maxillofacial surgeons, otolaryngologists, sleep surgeons, sleep medicine physicians, pulmonologists, dentists, residents, fellows, and other clinicians involved in the evaluation and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea.

 

SPEAKER

Rishi Jay Gupta, DDS, MD, MBA, FACS is Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon with specialized expertise in sleep surgery.

He earned his BA in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of California, Berkeley, followed by his DDS from UCSF, MBA from the University of San Francisco, and MD from the University of California, Davis. He subsequently completed training in General Surgery and his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at UCSF.

Dr. Gupta pursued additional subspecialty training through a Sleep Surgery Fellowship at the California Sleep Institute/Stanford University, establishing a clinical and academic focus on the surgical management of obstructive sleep apnea.

His work encompasses contemporary sleep surgery, including maxillomandibular advancement and upper airway stimulation. He has published specifically on Upper Airway (Hypoglossal Nerve) Stimulation for the Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea and has contributed to the evolving multidisciplinary approach to surgical OSA treatment.

Dr. Gupta is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. His academic and clinical work reflects an emphasis on individualized treatment selection and the integration of oral and maxillofacial surgery into comprehensive sleep medicine.
