Renata Pittella: Tooth Autotransplantation - From Surgical Planning to Predictable Outcomes
Tooth autotransplantation offers a unique biological solution for replacing missing or compromised teeth. But what makes a transplant successful - and how can digital planning make the procedure more predictable?

About the event
In this session, Renata Pittella Cançado will present a contemporary approach to tooth autotransplantation, combining biological principles, careful case selection and precise surgical planning.
Drawing on her clinical and published work, she will discuss the complete treatment pathway: selecting the patient and donor tooth, evaluating the recipient site, planning the procedure, performing atraumatic transplantation and managing the postoperative period.
The session will explore the growing role of CBCT, computer-assisted planning, donor-tooth replicas and surgical guides in reducing manipulation of the donor tooth and supporting a more controlled surgical procedure.
Special attention will be given to an important clinical question: Can teeth with completely formed roots and closed apices be successfully autotransplanted? Renata will draw on published clinical cases to examine the surgical, endodontic and follow-up considerations involved.
SPEAKER
Renata Pittella Cançado is a dentist, university professor and researcher at the Department of Clinical Dentistry, Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES), Vitória, Brazil.
Her academic and clinical activities include Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and multidisciplinary dental care. She is also involved in research governance at UFES through the Human Research Ethics Committee of the university's Health Sciences Center.
Her scientific work includes a particular interest in dental autotransplantation. She co-authored the 2022 special article Dental autotransplantation as an alternative treatment for the loss of permanent anterior teeth in children, describing a multidisciplinary protocol incorporating CBCT, computer-assisted planning, rapid prototyping of the donor tooth, surgical guidance and postoperative protection.
Her more recent work includes Autotransplantation of teeth with closed apices: case reports, examining the transplantation of teeth with complete root formation through clinical cases and comparison with the contemporary literature.
Her combination of clinical surgery, university teaching and research provides a multidisciplinary perspective on how established biological principles can be combined with modern digital planning in contemporary tooth autotransplantation.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After this session, participants should be able to:
Recognize the principal indications and case-selection criteria for dental autotransplantation.
Understand the biological and surgical factors that influence transplantation outcomes.
Apply the principles of atraumatic donor-tooth removal and recipient-site preparation.
Understand how CBCT, digital planning, donor-tooth replicas and surgical guides can support the procedure.
Distinguish important treatment considerations for teeth with incomplete and complete root formation.
Plan appropriate postoperative management and multidisciplinary follow-up.
TARGET AUDIENCE
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists, endodontists, pediatric dentists, restorative dentists, residents and other clinicians interested in biological alternatives for the replacement of missing or compromised teeth.
