About the event

Facial trauma in children presents challenges that differ substantially from those encountered in adults. The developing facial skeleton, evolving dentition and occlusion, and continuing craniofacial growth all need to be considered when evaluating injuries and selecting treatment.

In this surgeON session, Renata Pittella Cançado will explore the evaluation and management of pediatric facial trauma from an oral and maxillofacial surgery perspective. The lecture will consider initial assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning, with attention to how patient age, dentition, facial growth and injury pattern influence clinical decisions.

The session will examine the principles involved in managing dentoalveolar and facial injuries in growing patients and the balance between restoring anatomy and function while minimizing interference with subsequent growth and development.

The subject aligns with Dr. Pittella Cançado's documented work in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Traumatology. Her CV identifies facial trauma among her principal areas of activity, and a Brazilian federal record documents her participation in a Manejo del Trauma Facial event in Quito. Her pediatric work also includes research involving dental trauma and anterior tooth loss in children.

SPEAKER

Renata Pittella Cançado is a Brazilian dentist, university professor and researcher in the Department of Clinical Dentistry at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES). She graduated in Dentistry from UFES in 1994 and subsequently completed both a Master's degree (1999) and Doctorate (2001) in Dentistry, with a focus on Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Traumatology, at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS). Her academic record identifies Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, facial trauma, orthognathic surgery, epidemiology and growth among her principal areas of activity.

Her academic work encompasses both surgical and pediatric subjects. Her publications include work on dental autotransplantation following permanent anterior tooth loss in children and research on oral lesions in a Brazilian pediatric population. She has also contributed to pediatric case literature.

In addition to her teaching and research activities, Dr. Pittella Cançado is the Coordinator of the Human Research Ethics Committee of the university's Health Sciences Center.

Her combination of oral and maxillofacial surgical training, experience in facial trauma, and academic work involving growing patients provides a multidisciplinary foundation for this discussion of pediatric facial trauma.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the anatomical and developmental factors that distinguish pediatric facial trauma from trauma in adults.

  • Describe a systematic approach to the clinical and radiographic evaluation of facial injuries in children.

  • Identify how age, dentition, occlusion and craniofacial growth influence treatment planning.

  • Distinguish management considerations for dentoalveolar and facial skeletal injuries in growing patients.

  • Understand the principles guiding operative and non-operative decision-making in pediatric facial trauma.

  • Outline appropriate follow-up considerations, including dental development, occlusion and facial growth.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons, pediatric dentists, orthodontists, general dentists, emergency physicians, residents, fellows and other clinicians involved in the assessment and treatment of facial and dentoalveolar trauma in children and adolescents.
