About the event

How can a museum visit improve diagnostic accuracy? Can the arts strengthen clinical observation, communication, and patient care? And how do educational innovations developed in a single institution grow into models with global impact?

In this lecture, Dr. Razan Baabdullah shares her journey from developing local educational interventions to advancing broader conversations about healthcare education, equity, and policy. Drawing on her research in oral cancer screening, visual thinking strategies, facial analysis training, social medicine, and humanities-based learning, she will demonstrate how creative interdisciplinary approaches can enhance clinical reasoning and transform healthcare education.

Using examples from Harvard Medical School and international collaborations, Dr. Baabdullah will discuss how innovations in observation training, oral cancer detection, and learner-centered curricula can be rigorously studied, evaluated, and scaled. Participants will gain practical insights into building programs that improve both educational outcomes and patient care while contributing to larger institutional and policy-level change.

This session will challenge traditional assumptions about surgical education and explore how the arts and humanities can become powerful tools for advancing maxillofacial surgery, healthcare education, and global health.

SPEAKER

Razan Mohammad Baabdullah, BDS, MS, FRCDC is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, educator, researcher, and advocate for interdisciplinary innovation in healthcare. She completed her oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at McGill University and earned a Master of Science degree from Harvard Medical School, where her work focused on oral cancer screening, health policy, social medicine, and educational innovation.

Her scholarship explores how the arts and humanities can enhance clinical observation, diagnostic reasoning, communication, and patient-centered care. She has pioneered educational initiatives incorporating Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), museum-based learning, facial analysis training, and humanities curricula into healthcare education. Her research has demonstrated how creative interdisciplinary approaches can improve diagnostic skills while fostering empathy, reflection, and equity in healthcare delivery.

Dr. Baabdullah's broader interests include oral cancer prevention, global surgery, educational research, social medicine, and the development of scalable educational models capable of influencing institutional practice and healthcare policy. Her work has been recognized internationally and contributes to emerging conversations about the future of healthcare education in the age of artificial intelligence.
