About the event

Bone grafting may be considered when orthognathic movements leave gaps that raise questions about bony healing, contour, or skeletal stability. This lecture will examine where grafting fits into planning for maxillary and mandibular osteotomies, how to evaluate the available evidence, and what remains uncertain about indications and graft materials. The session is framed around clinical decision making; its specific cases and techniques should be confirmed with the speaker before publication.

Dr. Baabdullah’s work connects directly to these questions. She has coauthored experimental research on a synthetic bone graft material in a critical size defect model and research on outcomes reported by patients undergoing orthognathic care. Her work in virtual surgical planning education also informs a structured approach to evaluating surgical movements. The animal study does not establish effectiveness in human orthognathic surgery.

SPEAKER

Razan Mohammad Baabdullah, BDS, MS, FRCDC is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and Assistant Professor at King Abdulaziz University. She earned her dental degree there and undertook oral and maxillofacial surgery training at McGill University; a professional speaker directory also records a surgical internship at McGill. She graduated in 2023 from Harvard Medical School’s Master of Science in Media, Medicine, and Health program.

Her scholarship spans bone defect healing, orthognathic patient outcomes, virtual surgical planning education, and surgical teaching. Relevant work includes a coauthored animal study of a synthetic bone graft material and a study validating an Arabic orthognathic quality of life questionnaire. She previously spoke at a SurgeON event on surgical education.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this event, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize orthognathic movements and osteotomy gaps that may prompt consideration of bone grafting.

  2. Describe the intended roles of grafting in bony healing, contour, and stability.

  3. Distinguish the types of evidence available for different osteotomy sites and graft materials.

  4. Identify patient and surgical planning factors relevant to a grafting decision.

  5. Evaluate the limits of experimental bone substitute research when applying it to clinical practice.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists involved in orthognathic care, craniofacial surgeons, surgical residents and fellows, and clinicians or researchers interested in bone healing and dentofacial deformity.
