About the event

Skin cancer is the most common malignancy worldwide, and the head and neck region accounts for the majority of cases encountered in clinical practice. Early recognition can dramatically improve outcomes, yet potentially dangerous lesions are often overlooked or mistaken for benign conditions.

In this practical, case-based lecture, Dr. Rachel Reynolds will provide clinicians with a systematic approach to identifying common and high-risk skin cancers of the head and neck. Through clinical photographs and real-world examples, participants will learn how to distinguish benign lesions from basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma, and other cutaneous malignancies that warrant urgent evaluation.

The session will focus on visual recognition, risk assessment, biopsy considerations, referral pathways, and the surgeon's role in early diagnosis. Particular attention will be paid to lesions that commonly present to oral and maxillofacial surgeons, head and neck surgeons, dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and primary care providers.

Whether you are a trainee or an experienced clinician, this lecture will enhance your ability to recognize potentially life-threatening skin cancers before they are missed.

SPEAKER

Rachel V. Reynolds, MD, is Interim Chair of Dermatology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School. She completed medical school at the University of Pennsylvania and her dermatology residency through the Harvard Combined Dermatology Program. She practices medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology and is recognized nationally for her clinical and educational contributions.

Dr. Reynolds serves in numerous leadership roles within the American Academy of Dermatology and has contributed to national clinical guidelines and educational initiatives. In addition to her expertise in general and surgical dermatology, she has a particular interest in skin cancer detection and the care of high-risk patients.

Her lecture will focus on the practical recognition of head and neck skin cancers and the diagnostic clues that help clinicians identify lesions requiring further investigation and treatment.
