Lynn Westphal: When Your Career Delays Your Family Building - Fertility Preservation for Surgeons

About the event

When Your Career Delays Your Family Building — Fertility Preservation for Surgeons is a professional development session that addresses the challenges many surgeons and surgical trainees face when career demands intersect with personal family-building goals. Surgical training and early career progression often coincide with the age period when fertility is naturally highest, leading many surgeons to postpone pregnancy or parenthood, which can have long-term implications for reproductive potential. This talk provides evidence-based insight into fertility preservation options, including egg and embryo cryopreservation, counseling strategies, timing considerations, and the role of multidisciplinary planning to support surgeons who wish to safeguard their future fertility while pursuing demanding training and clinical roles. The session also explores cultural and institutional factors that influence decisions around family building, aiming to empower attendees with practical guidance and resources for informed decision-making.
