About the event

In this provocative and high-impact session, Dr. Liron Bar-Peled shares the emerging science behind how tumors sense and survive cellular stress—and how his team is dismantling those pathways one by one. Surgeons will gain a fresh mechanistic understanding of cancer biology that directly informs precision treatment, therapeutic planning, and future innovations in oncologic surgery.

SPEAKER

Liron Bar-Peled is a leading cancer biologist whose work is reshaping our understanding of how tumor cells sense and adapt to metabolic and environmental stress. He serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and holds the prestigious Rullo Family Endowed Chair in Cancer Research at the Krantz Family Center for Cancer Research at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Bar-Peled’s laboratory integrates chemical biology, genetics, and translational oncology to uncover vulnerabilities in cancer’s stress-response pathways—discoveries that have already driven the development of novel therapeutic strategies. His research has been recognized with multiple awards and sustained competitive funding, reflecting his role as a scientific innovator at the forefront of precision cancer therapy.

Widely published and frequently invited to speak internationally, Dr. Bar-Peled is known not only for his groundbreaking mechanistic insights but also for forging collaborative bridges between basic scientists and clinicians. His work continues to influence how we diagnose, target, and conceptualize cancer biology today.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the key stress-response pathways that enable tumor growth and treatment resistance.

  2. Explain how novel chemical and genetic approaches identify actionable vulnerabilities in cancer cells.

  3. Discuss potential clinical implications of targeting stress-adaptation mechanisms in oncologic management.

  4. Apply insights from molecular cancer biology to surgical decision-making and multidisciplinary care planning.

TARGET AUDIENCE

  • Oral & maxillofacial surgeons

  • Head & neck oncologic surgeons

  • General surgeons and surgical oncologists

  • Residents, fellows, and early-career researchers in surgical disciplines

  • Multidisciplinary team members involved in cancer diagnosis and treatment
