WHAT IS THIS EVENT ABOUT?

The South Africa National Women’s Day online event will feature an inspiring panel of women surgeons from different countries sharing their transformative experiences. These trailblazing professionals will recount their unique paths through the challenging and often underrepresented field of surgery, offering candid insights into the hurdles they faced and the resilience required to overcome them. Their stories will illuminate the barriers encountered—from systemic biases to personal sacrifices—and the strategies they employed to turn their aspirations into reality. This event promises to be a powerful testament to the strength and determination of women in surgery, encouraging others to break through their own barriers and pursue their dreams with unwavering resolve.

SPEAKERS: 

Darlene Lubbe is an Associate Professor and Head of Unit in the Division of Otolaryngology at Groote Schuur Hospital, University of Cape Town, South Africa. Her main interest is endoscopic sinus, skull base and transorbital surgery. She specialises in complex surgeries and is part of the team that pioneered endoscopic skull base and transorbital surgery in South Africa. She currently runs the Karl Storz training programme in endoscopic sinus and skull base surgery for sub-Saharan Africa.

Sonal Anchlia is a Professor & Head, OMFS, Government Dental College, Ahmedabad

Eugênia Figueiredo is a university professor and the head of department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and owns a private practice at Recife, Brazil. She is member of AOCMF and Brazilian College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and she did an AO CMF Fellowship at São Paulo, Brazil with an emphasis on temporomandibular disorders.

MODERATORS: 

Sunil Aniruth Aniruth is in full-time private practice in Cape Town as a specialist maxillofacial and oral surgeon. He has a special interest in facial trauma, reconstruction and dental implants. Dr Aniruth regularly speaks at conferences and has most recently been acknowledged for his work on the Draft Bill of Rights for Healthcare Professionals.

Narayan Ramachandran is a Sr Consultant Orthopedics & Trauma, in Oman with more than 35 years of experience. He completed his Medical education and residency training from Bombay University, India. He has a MSc in Disaster Medicine from University of Eastern Piedmont, Novara, Italy.  He is Founding Executive Council Member, Asian Association for Dynamic Osteosynthesis, Life Member, Indo German Orthopedic Foundation, Member, Oman Orthopedic Society, Past President, European Master in Disaster Medicine and many other Orthopedic societies.

He is a Certified Life & Leadership Coach from the International Coaching Federation.
