About the event
Successful wound healing is fundamental to surgical outcomes—yet impaired healing remains a major clinical challenge across specialties.
In this surgeON live lecture, Dr. Henry Hsia explores the biological mechanisms that determine why wounds heal—or fail to heal—and translates these insights into practical strategies for clinical care.
Drawing on his work in regenerative wound healing and translational research, this session will examine the role of the wound microenvironment, inflammation, and cellular behavior, including fibroblast activity and tissue signaling, in both normal and impaired healing.
Participants will gain a clearer understanding of how these mechanisms influence outcomes in complex clinical scenarios, including post-surgical wounds, oncologic defects, and chronic non-healing wounds. The lecture will also highlight emerging therapeutic concepts and how they may impact future surgical practice.
KEY LEARNING OBJECTIVES
• Understand the biological phases of wound healing and factors leading to failure
• Recognize the role of inflammation, fibroblasts, and the wound microenvironment
• Apply evidence-based principles to improve healing in surgical patients
• Identify clinical strategies for managing complex and chronic wounds
• Review emerging regenerative approaches and their clinical relevance
TARGET AUDIENCE
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons, plastic surgeons, head and neck surgeons, oral surgeons, and trainees - including residents, fellows, and early-career clinicians - interested in improving outcomes in wound healing and reconstruction.
SPEAKER
Henry C. Hsia, MD FACS is Professor of Surgery and Biomedical Engineering at Yale School of Medicine and Founding Director of the Yale Regenerative Wound Healing Program. He is a board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in complex wound care and reconstructive surgery.
His clinical work focuses on challenging wound scenarios, including post-oncologic defects and chronic non-healing wounds. His research is internationally recognized for advancing the understanding of wound healing biology, particularly the roles of fibroblasts, inflammation, and the wound microenvironment.
Dr. Hsia’s work bridges regenerative science and surgical practice, with a focus on translating biological insights into improved clinical outcomes.
