About the event

Injury to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) remains one of the most significant complications in mandibular third molar surgery. Accurate risk assessment before surgery is essential for safe decision-making, patient counseling, and selecting the optimal surgical strategy.

In this surgeON masterclass, Dr. Thereza Bussolaro, an expert in oral and maxillofacial surgery, will review the key predictive factors associated with IAN injury during third molar removal. The session will explore how radiographic findings, anatomical relationships, and clinical variables can help surgeons anticipate nerve risk before entering the operating room.

Participants will learn how to interpret critical imaging signs on panoramic radiographs and CBCT, recognize high-risk cases, and apply surgical strategies that reduce the likelihood of nerve damage.

Through clinical examples and evidence-based discussion, this lecture provides practical guidance for surgeons and dentists who perform third molar surgery and wish to improve safety and outcomes.

Key Learning Points

• Radiographic predictors of inferior alveolar nerve injury

• When CBCT imaging is indicated in third molar cases

• Clinical risk factors influencing nerve proximity

• Surgical strategies to reduce nerve injury risk

• Patient counseling and informed consent in high-risk cases

This session is designed for oral and maxillofacial surgeons, oral surgeons, and dentists seeking to refine their risk assessment and surgical planning in mandibular third molar surgery.

SPEAKER

Dr. Claudine Thereza-Bussolaro, DDS, MSc, PhD is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and Assistant Professor at the School of Dentistry, Universidade de Cuiabá in Mato Grosso, Brazil, with research collaboration at the University of Alberta, Canada. Her academic work focuses on dentoalveolar surgery, CBCT imaging, and risk prediction in oral surgery, particularly identifying predictive factors for inferior alveolar nerve injury in third molar surgery. She is an active researcher and international lecturer in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
