Lingual Nerve Repair – What I Have Learned Over the Last 15 Years is an expert clinical session presented by Dr. Carl Bouchard, drawing on over a decade of dedicated experience in peripheral nerve surgery and orofacial nerve repair. In this talk, Dr. Bouchard shares his long-term insights into the diagnosis, surgical strategies, and outcomes of lingual nerve injuries — a complex and impactful condition that can result from trauma, third molar surgery, and other orofacial procedures. Participants will gain a practical understanding of patient assessment, timing of intervention, microsurgical techniques, nerve grafting options, and postoperative care, as well as strategies to improve sensory recovery and minimize morbidity. The session highlights evidence-based lessons learned, common pitfalls, and evolving best practices in the management of lingual nerve injuries to enhance clinical decision-making and patient outcomes.

SPEAKER: Dr Carl Bouchard DMD, MSc, FRCD(C) is an associate professor and program director of the oral and maxillofacial surgery program at Laval University. He works at CHU de Québec – Université Laval. His major fields of interest include orthognathic, trauma, TMJ surgery and nerve repair. He has published numerous articles and book chapters and his currently involved in many research projects. Dr. Bouchard is the Canadian liaison on the executive board of the JOMS.
