TITLE

Emerging Technology in Maxillofacial Surgery - a Global Perspective

TALK INFO

This session explored how cutting-edge technologies are transforming the practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery around the world. It provided a global overview of innovations that are reshaping diagnostic techniques, surgical planning, intraoperative execution, and postoperative care — emphasizing tools that improve precision, personalization, and patient outcomes. Topics typically covered in such a talk include virtual surgical planning (VSP), 3D imaging and printing, artificial intelligence (AI) for preoperative simulation and decision support, augmented reality (AR) for enhanced intraoperative guidance, minimally invasive instrument platforms, and robot-assisted techniques that extend surgical capabilities. These technologies are enabling more predictable reconstructions, streamlined workflows, and ultimately better functional and aesthetic results for patients across diverse clinical scenarios in maxillofacial care.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of the session, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify key emerging technologies currently influencing maxillofacial surgical practice worldwide, such as AI, VSP, and 3D printing.

  2. Understand how digital tools enhance surgical planning and execution by improving accuracy and reducing intraoperative uncertainty.

  3. Recognize the role of advanced imaging and personalized implants in achieving custom reconstructions tailored to individual patient anatomy.

  4. Appreciate innovations in augmented and virtual reality that support training, simulation, and intraoperative decision-making.

  5. Discuss the impact of these technologies on global surgical practice, including potential benefits and limitations in different healthcare systems
