Craniomaxillofacial reconstruction has entered an era of unprecedented innovation, where precision medicine, virtual surgical planning, patient-specific technologies, and microsurgery are transforming the way surgeons restore both function and appearance following facial trauma, cancer, and congenital deformities.

The EPPOCRATIS framework represents a comprehensive approach to precision craniomaxillofacial reconstruction, integrating point of care virtual surgical planning, 3D printing, customized guides, and microsurgical free tissue transfer. By combining these technologies surgeons can achieve increasingly predictable and personalized outcomes.

This lecture will focus on contemporary principles of primary and secondary facial reconstruction, highlighting EPPOCRATIS in managing complex craniofacial deformities. Dr. Sharaf will discuss reconstructive decision-making across the continuum of care, from acute management of facial injuries to secondary revision procedures aimed at optimizing function, symmetry, and aesthetics. Participants will gain insight into how precision planning, microsurgical techniques, patient-specific implants, and digital workflows are improving outcomes in challenging reconstructive cases.

Through complex clinical cases, participants will explore contemporary reconstructive algorithms, digital workflows, microsurgical decision-making, patient-specific implant design, and evolving strategies for precision facial reconstruction. This session is designed for oral and maxillofacial surgeons, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, craniofacial surgeons, head and neck surgeons, microsurgeons, residents, fellows, and all clinicians interested in advancing the science and practice of facial reconstruction.

 

SPEAKER

Basel Sharaf, MD, DDS, FACS is Professor of Plastic Surgery at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, with a joint appointment in the Department of Clinical Anatomy. He serves as Director of Aesthetic Surgery, Co-Director of the Oculo-Facial Plastic Clinic, and Consultant in the Division of Plastic Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

An internationally recognized leader in craniofacial reconstruction, and patient-specific surgical planning, Dr. Sharaf has dedicated his career to advancing precision reconstructive surgery through innovation, translational research, and multidisciplinary collaboration.

Following dual degrees in medicine and dentistry, Dr. Sharaf completed advanced training in oral and maxillofacial surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, and microsurgery at internationally renowned institutions. His clinical practice focuses on primary and secondary facial reconstruction following trauma with focus on oculo-facial plastic surgery and facial aesthetic surgery.

Dr. Sharaf has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications and 14 book chapters, lectures extensively throughout the world, and is internationally recognized for pioneering advances in precision craniofacial reconstruction, virtual surgical planning, and patient-specific reconstructive techniques.
