About the event
Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders (OPMDs) represent one of the most critical diagnostic and management challenges in contemporary oral and maxillofacial care. Accurate recognition, risk assessment, and timely intervention can significantly alter patient outcomes and reduce progression to oral cancer.
In this focused online lecture, Dr. Paras B. Patel, Director of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology at ProPath and co-founder of the Center for Oral Pathology, will provide surgeons with a clinically practical, pathology-driven update on the evolving concepts in OPMDs. Drawing from his extensive experience in diagnostic and surgical pathology as well as active research in oral carcinogenesis, Dr. Patel will review current classifications, emerging risk predictors, and real-world management implications.
This session is designed to directly enhance the decision-making of surgeons involved in biopsy, surveillance, and oral cancer prevention.
SPEAKER
Paras B. Patel DDS is a board certified oral and maxillofacial pathologist, who obtained his dental degree from Howard University College of Dentistry in 2011. After graduation, he practiced general dentistry for a few years in the Lubbock area with the Community Health Center of Lubbock, as their staff dentist on the mobile dental unit. In 2014, he began his residency in oral and maxillofacial pathology at TAMU (Baylor) School of Dentistry. Upon completion of his residency, he took a position at the college of dentistry as a full-time faculty member, and after 5 years in academia, Dr. Patel transitioned into private practice and helped establish the Center for Oral Pathology, where he continues his clinical practice. He also had the opportunity to continue his practice of surgical pathology in conjunction with ProPath and helped establish the division of oral and maxillofacial pathology, where he currently serves as director. Dr. Patel also stays active in clinical research involving oral potentially malignant disorders and oral cancer.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After participating in this activity, surgeons will be able to:
Identify and differentiate the key clinical and histopathologic features of common Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders.
Interpret dysplasia grading and risk stratification to guide clinical management and surveillance strategies.
Apply evidence-based principles for biopsy timing, follow-up intervals, and referral pathways.
Integrate current research and evolving concepts in oral carcinogenesis into daily surgical practice.
TARGET AUDIENCE
This lecture is designed for:
Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons
Head & Neck / Oncologic Surgeons
