PREMIUM MASTERCLASS - LIMITED ENROLLMENT

This advanced educational activity is designed to provide direct interaction and small-group mentorship.

Enrollment is limited to 10 participants to ensure a highly interactive, case-based learning environment.

Complimentary access is available for surgeON subscribers (first 5 seats, priority access).

Remaining seats are offered as a paid registration.

Limited enrollment ensures a high level of faculty interaction and peer discussion.

Participation is confirmed on a first-come basis.

COURSE OVERVIEW

Facial amputation and severe panfacial trauma represent some of the most complex challenges in craniofacial surgery, requiring precise sequencing, sound judgment, and coordinated interdisciplinary care.

This surgeON Masterclass offers an interactive, case-based format in which participants engage directly with Maria J. Troulis to examine decision-making in high-acuity scenarios. The focus is on structured clinical reasoning, operative sequencing, and management of uncertainty in complex trauma.

Key themes include:

  • Sequencing of reconstruction in severe panfacial injury

  • Prioritization of functional and anatomical outcomes

  • Intraoperative decision-making in complex and evolving situations

EDUCATIONAL APPROACH

This activity is structured as a discussion-based masterclass, emphasizing:

  • Small-group mentorship

  • Case-based analysis

  • Interactive dialogue and participant engagement

  • Application of principles to real clinical scenarios

Participants are encouraged to contribute cases and actively engage in discussion.

FACULTY

Maria Troulis, DDS, MSc is the Walter C. Guralnick Distinguished Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Harvard School of Dental Medicine and Harvard Medical School, and a surgeon in the Department of Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

An internationally recognized expert in craniofacial surgery, Dr. Troulis has extensive experience in the management of complex facial trauma, including panfacial injuries and reconstructive sequencing in high-acuity cases. Her work integrates advanced surgical technique with structured clinical decision-making in challenging and evolving operative scenarios.

She trained at McGill University and completed advanced fellowship training at Massachusetts General Hospital in pediatric cranio-maxillofacial surgery. At Harvard, she has held key leadership roles including OMFS Residency Program Director and Department Chair, shaping surgical training and advancing standards in craniofacial care.

Dr. Troulis is widely respected for her expertise in operative sequencing, interdisciplinary coordination, and reconstruction in severe facial injury, and is a recipient of multiple awards for excellence in mentoring and education. She serves as North American Clinical Lead for surgeON and Associate Editor of the AO CMF Trauma & Reconstruction Journal.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This activity is intended for clinicians involved in the management of complex craniofacial trauma, including:

  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons

  • Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons

  • Otolaryngology / Head and Neck Surgeons

  • Trauma Surgeons

  • Fellows and Residents in surgical training programs

  • Advanced practitioners in craniofacial care

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe principles of initial assessment and stabilization in facial amputation and panfacial trauma.

  2. Identify key anatomical and functional priorities in complex craniofacial reconstruction.

  3. Explain evidence-based sequencing strategies for staged management of severe facial injuries.

  4. Evaluate reconstructive options and timing in high-complexity trauma cases.

  5. Recognize potential complications and implement strategies to optimize functional and aesthetic outcomes.

  6. Apply interdisciplinary, case-based decision-making in the management of complex craniofacial trauma.
