About the event
Pain is not only a symptom but also a powerful disruptor of sleep. In this lecture, Dr. Gilles Lavigne will explore how pain impacts sleep quality, contributes to insomnia, and interacts with obstructive sleep apnea. The session will provide an accessible overview of underlying mechanisms, clinical implications, and management strategies—both pharmacological and non-pharmacological. Surgeons will gain valuable insights into recognizing and addressing pain–sleep interactions that influence patient outcomes.
SPEAKER:
Dr. Gilles Lavigne, DMD, PhD, CM, is a leading clinician-scientist in orofacial pain and dental sleep medicine. His research has transformed understanding of how pain and sleep interact, particularly in conditions such as bruxism, insomnia, and obstructive sleep apnea. Former Dean of Dentistry at Université de Montréal and past President of the Canadian Sleep and Pain Societies, he held a Canada Research Chair in Pain, Sleep & Trauma. A Member of the Order of Canada and Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, Dr. Lavigne now serves as Professor at McGill University.
