This talk will focus on the complexities of nasal reconstruction for individuals with cleft lip and/or palate. He will discuss both the functional challenges of restoring proper nasal function and the aesthetic considerations involved in achieving a natural appearance. Drawing on his extensive experience, Atherton will share valuable insights, case studies, and techniques to address these unique challenges in cleft rhinoplasty.


LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Understand the complexities of cleft rhinoplasty – Recognize the unique functional and aesthetic challenges associated with nasal reconstruction in individuals with cleft lip and/or palate.

  • Evaluate and discuss surgical techniques – Identify and describe effective surgical strategies for addressing both functional and aesthetic aspects of cleft rhinoplasty.

  • Analyze case studies – Review and assess real-life case studies to understand common complications, patient outcomes, and best practices in cleft rhinoplasty.

  • Enhance decision-making in multidisciplinary care – Learn how to collaborate with other specialists (e.g., speech therapists, orthodontists) for comprehensive patient care in the context of cleft lip and palate treatment.

  • Improve aesthetic outcomes – Apply principles of aesthetic surgery to achieve natural, functional, and sustainable results in cleft rhinoplasty patients.

SPEAKER:

Duncan Atherton BSc (Hons), MBBS, MD, FRCS (Plast) has over 21 years of experience as a Plastic and Reconstructive surgeon.

He currently works as a consultant at Guy's and St. Thomas NHS Foundation Trust and as Deputy Head of Service for the Evelina Cleft Service.

He divides his time between a busy NHS service specialising in cleft lip and palate and a thriving private rhinoplasty practice. He is also an enthusiastic teacher and surgical trainer, continuing to publish widely in his field and to this end is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at King’s College London.

He is BAAPS and BAPRAS accredited, a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and is a member of the European Rhinoplasty Society
